Papers, 1812-1856.

Papers of the Johnson family of Nahant, Mass. include a diary (1812-30) of Betsy (Graves) Johnson and letters to Betsy and Joseph Johnson from their sons, Daniel A., Edward K., and Franklin E. Johnson. The brothers wrote of their gold prospecting in California, their living and working conditions, their frustrations with their failure to find gold and with their losses on claims, and of news from Nahant and family. Letters also contain some discussion of California weather and politics. Betsy Johnson's diary is a record of her religious thoughts and participation in churches and religious societies, first in Reading, Mass. and later, after her marriage in 1819, in Nahant.
